It's time to share the results of our Trout Spey fly tying contest sponsored by RIO and Redington.

2nd Place and winner of a RIO InTouch line of his choice:

Ish’s Rump Roast Cray by Eric Ishiwata

“This semi-imitative crayfish is designed to be swung in clear conditions, cooler water, and bright skies when trout are willing to chase a larger meal but might be turned off by flashier patterns. Aside from the small cone head, it uses the “Vendetta” weighting style (i.e., Ish’s Vendetta Cray from MFC), which allows beads to be added/removed beneath the tube on a stretch cord loop that is hitched around bead chain eyes. This allows the weight to be adjusted—heavier at the heads of runs and lighter as the fly starts to hang up—without having to switch flies, swap sink tips, or add/remove awkward weights to the tippet.

The Rump Roast Cray fishes well wherever crayfish abound—particular when there is an abundance of exoskeletons along the bank. I fish it throughout the Rockies, typically with an Airflo Flo Tip (T-10), four-feet of 8lb Maxima and a non-slip mono loop knot. It can be twitched or stripped, but my biggest trout have come on a dead swing. Let the pattern tumble as it reaches the optimum depth then swing it to the bank. “

You can find the full tying recipe to this fly and as well as the other winners in the 2017.4 Issue of the magazine in PRINT or for PDF Download
