Quick Review: Fishpond Thunderhead Submersible Sling

To be honest, I’m not much of a gear junkie these days. For quite some time, I’ve had what I needed and been content with that. But situations can change, needs can arise and a good piece of equipment always fills a need.

So when this summer I was asked to join a week long-float trip down Idaho’s Middle Fork of the Salmon, a new need had showed itself. The opportunity was there to get a bunch of great photos but I would be riding through plentiful whitewater in someone else’s raft and believe it or not, I didn’t own any type of waterproof bag capable of housing my camera within close reach.

The perfect pack for me to scramble up a cliff and capture some photos of Ian Faurot running his gear hauler, 26' sweep boat down the Middle Fork.

With this in mind, I picked up one of Fishpond’s new Thunderhead Submersible Sling Packs. It filled the void perfectly, keeping my camera safe and dry yet within easy reach on the boat. For the hiking, swung fly angler, the pack keeps all your gear close while not interfering with your Spey casts.

I have since used the Thunderhead while doing a couple of days hike-in steelhead fishing, finding the size appropriate for my camera, a fly box or two, lunch and water. Everything I need for a simple day of swinging flies.
